Identification of Errors

Error #3. Vowel Pronunciation

People whose first language (L1) or mother tongue is Spanish used to struggle with the pronunciation of vowels because of many reasons, among them, we can count the fact that for us in Spanish there is no a difference between them, what you look at is what you have, the vowel sound of ‘a’ is an ‘ah’ no more varieties as in the words ‘manzana’ or ‘cangrejo’, meanwhile, in English, you can have a vowel with two different sounds such as ‘a’ that has an /æ/ or /ɑ/ sounds, we can see it in the words ‘hat’ or ‘heart’. This is because English is not a phonographic language, which means the way in which we write words won’t be the same way of spelled them.

Another interference appears because in Spanish we have five vowel sound positions in pronunciation, which changes in English and that has around twenty distinct vowel sound positions, for example, Spanish /u/ is made when we place our tongue at the back of our mouths, but in English /u/ in words like food is more central and the /ʊ/ in words like put, is more open and central.

Exercise #1

Instructions:

Write a list of twenty words on the board to practice the different sounds that a vowel can have in English this time we will practice with words that contain the ‘u’ sound.

Then you are going to turn the roulette and according to the sound that the arrow selects, in this case, /u/ which represents a long vowel sound or /ʊ/ which is a short vowel sound, you will choose two words from the previous list that contain that specific sound and write it in the provided space, warn yourself because some words can contain both sounds. A special case happened if the arrow stops on free then the group is out of that round, however, the group can help another, and gain an extra point for their group if the answer is correct.

Then when every word has been selected someone that you choose will pronounce every word, in this way everyone can hear, repeat, and check word pronunciation.

Exercise #2

The Magic cube of Pronunciation is a cube made of paper and on its 6 faces it will have a challenge writing, the challenges will be given by someone in the group. The  teacher/student will have to throw the cube and see its magic, within the challenges that are in the cube are the tongue twisters, singing the song, reading the paragraph, doing the dynamics, choosing a number and you are safe, all these challenges that our magic cube brings will allow to you to learn in an easier and more fun way.

If the classes were virtual, the teacher/student would have to create a virtual cube to be able to do the dynamics with the students and he would have to throw the cube and depending on the number that falls in the cube that will be the challenge.
